Scritta nel 1962 e ambientata nel salotto di una sofisticata clinica elvetica per malattie mentali, questa commedia viene condotta con le armi della farsa e di un grottesco tinto di cabarettismo. Durrenmatt vi affronta, attraverso un continuo capovolgimento dell’azione scenica, rivelazioni e sempre nuovi personaggi, il tema epocale della responsabilità dello scienziato di fronte al genere umano. Formalmente “giallo poliziesco” con tanto di cadaveri e poliziotti sul palcoscenico, la pièce è di fatto una sapiente metafora della nostra condizione nell’èra nucleare. Muovendo infatti dalla considerazione che “un dramma che tratti di fisici deve essere paradossale”, Durrenmatt avverte che se “il contenuto della fisica riguarda solo i fisici, i suoi effetti riguardano tutti”, ma “ciò che riguarda tutti può essere può essere risolto solo da tutti”.
Written in 1962 and set in the living room of a sophisticated Swiss clinic for mental illness, this comedy is conducted with the weapons of farce and a grotesque tinged with cabaret. Durrenmatt tackles the epoch-making theme of the scientist’s responsibility towards mankind through a continuous reversal of the action, revelations and new characters. Formally a “detective story” with lots of corpses and policemen on stage, the play is in fact a skilful metaphor for our condition in the nuclear age. Starting from the consideration that “a drama dealing with physicists must be paradoxical”, Durrenmatt warns that if “the content of physics concerns only physicists, its effects concern everyone”, but “what concerns everyone can only be solved by everyone”.
